My musical life began in the misty ’80s, as a member of bands inspired by the great post-punk and dream-pop artists of the era. At the time, I was the drummer and main songwriter for these groups–an interesting combination. As the band days came to a close, I transitioned to writing dreamy little folk songs on acoustic guitar, recording them at home and, now and then, sharing them with a small circle of friends.
I was more or less content with this arrangement for many years. However, in 2001, at the urging of a few good friends, I finally pulled together some of those tunes and released a first solo CD, Wake of the Moon. To my surprise, the album generated a bit of internet buzz–primarily among the Nick Drake and moody-mellow-music crowds–and over the next few years, I distributed nearly all of the first run of 1000 copies.
From the outset, I made Wake of the Moon available online as a complete free download, and also provided CDs on a complimentary basis for those who could not otherwise afford them. Many listeners responded by, in return, sharing music with me, and along the way, several long term friendships were forged … cool.
In 2007, I released a follow-up CD called, Everything Takes Forever. (A self-fulfilling title, given how long it took to finish!) Again, I offered Everything Takes Forever as a full, free download, but also decided to send it in to CD Baby for online purchase and distribution. I was unaware that CD Baby reviewed incoming CDs and was shocked and gratified when they selected it as a Top Editor’s Pick, featuring it as one of their top five CDs out of a catalog of half a million titles, and stating, “Simply put, if you only buy one folk or rock album this month, this should be it.”
The CD Baby recommendation led to additional buzz and new opportunities. Eventually, I began working with a well respected, LA based music supervision company and they have since placed several of my songs in films and on national TV shows, including: Hall Pass, One Tree Hill, Being Human and Ghost Whisperer.
A new album, The Magical Adventures of Down has recently been completed and released online here. An “official” release including physical CDs will follow in late summer or early fall 2011. Stay tuned for more details!
In addition to my acoustic-based music, I’m also involved in a yet-to-be-named, shoegazey, dream-pop band project with my good friend and long term musical collaborator, Gordon Ranney. Our work-in-progress tunes can be sampled here.
